Three customs officers and two border police officers were detained as a result of the searches carried out at the Leușeni customs post on February 8. They are suspected of taking bribe from passenger and parcel carriers without a license and from Moldovans who stayed longer than allowed in the EU, IPN reports.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office said searches were conducted in the offices of nine border police officers and three customs officers in a criminal case started over passive and active corruption. The suspects favored the passing without customs control or with superficial control of trucks and cars loaded with goods and parcels. Also, they took bribe from Moldovans with biometric passports for allowing them to cross the border to the European states and, respectively, to the Republic of Moldova without imposing penalties for exceeding the period of stay in the European Union on them. Bribe was also taken from resident and nonresident private individuals for allowing them to cross the state boarder amid the pandemic restrictions.

Nine employees of the Boarder Police are suspected of committing 64 acts of corruption, the sums varying between €10 and €200, while three employees of the Customs Service are suspected of committing 26 acts of corruption for sums oscillating between €50 and €200.
