The General Inspectorate for Emergencies called on the people to avoid burning vegetation as the fire can spread swiftly now that the temperatures are high and the level of moisture is low, IPN reports.

Ten hectares of grass were burned on the outskirts of Ungheni town yesterday and last night. Rescuers dealt with burning vegetation on 3 ha at the entrance to Straseni town and on 2 ha near the belt road in Cahul town.

Victor Dumneanu, deputy head of the State Ecological Inspectorate, said the burning of dry foliage destroys the fertile layer of soil and pollutes the atmosphere.

Those who set fire to vegetal and other kind of waste face a fine of 1,000 to 2,000 lei in the case of private individuals and of 10,000 to 15,000 lei in the case of legal entities.

The persons who are witness to burning of vegetation are asked to call the local emergency inspectorates or 112 in case of fire.

So far this spring, the firefighters dealt with burning vegetation on over 500 ha.
