The International Documentary Film Festival “Chronograph” was opened on May 12 with screenings of films for children. This is a novelty of this year’s edition. A number of 45 films from different countries, selected out of a total of 600 documentaries, will be shown during the seven-day Festival, IPN reports.

The Festivals’ aristic director Leontina Vatamanu said “Chronograph” reached maturity as it has a well-defined conception, has personality and a name in Europe. “The fact that 600 films take part this year is an indicator that 600 teams of filmmakers, discovering this Festival, discovered also the Republic of Moldova,” she stated.

According to her, the films competing in the contest cover a wide range of topics, formulas and cinematographic language. “You will see here the documentary film trends and what is shown on the big screens of Europe and other parts of the world,” said Leontina Vatamanu.

Minister of Culture Monica Babuc said that despite all the obstacles and problems faced by culture in Moldova during the 25 years of independence, there are enthusiastic people who know to assume responsibilities. “The Ministry of Culture has always supported this event because it realizes its importance in the cultural sphere in the Republic of Moldova,” she stated.

Three French documentaries for children will be screened during the Festival. French Ambassador in Chisinau Pascal Vagogne said these films center on childhood, education and justice. “All the films focus on juvenile justice and, in particular, on educative intervention within the judiciary system,” he stated.

Project manager of the EU Delegation to Moldova Fabien Schaeffer said this program is a cultural one and Moldova joined it last year. “By this partnership, we aim to support the promotion of culture in the Republic of Moldova,” stated Fabien Schaeffer.
