Items made by hand by persons held in the country’s jails were displayed at a charity fair mounted in the square of the Metropolitan Cathedral “God’s Birth” on May 25. Half of the proceeds will be donated to children suffering from cancer, while the other half will be transferred to the authors’ personal account, IPN reports.

Oleg Pantea, head of the Public Relations Division of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions, said this charity event became a tradition, being staged for seven years already. The exhibition and sale were mounted on the occasion of the Feast of Ascension. The exhibits include icons, candelabrums, paintings, souvenirs, mockups, decorative objects, etc. They were all made by detains from the 17 jails of Moldova.

The previous years, half of the proceeds were donated to the children’s section of the Oncological Institute. The rest of the money is transferred to the account of detainees so that these can purchase materials to make new items.

The exhibits are sold for 50 to 1,000 lei.
