A demonstration entitled “Ribbentrop – Molotov Pact and its consequences over Basarabia, Northern Bucovina and Hertza region” took place on August 23 in the Alley of Classics in Chisinau. The demonstration was attended by 50 persons, the majority of them aged people. The participants waved tricolours with black ribbons. They had placards with such slogans as “Union with motherland, our holy goal”, “Down with the Prut River border”, “We want in Europe together with the country”, “The Great Romania – the only salvation”. The organisers of the demonstration, The Molotov – Ribbentrop Antipact Association and the Unionist Movement of Moldova say that the liquidation of the consequences of Molotov – Ribbentrop pact means a whole Romania within the borders it had before 1940. According to Leader of Unionist Movement of Moldova Ilie Bratu, the unification of Basarabia with Romania is possible and complies with the international law. He emphasised that only by becoming a part of Romania Moldova will manage to join the European Union. The participants said that the unification is a necessity, as the nation was separated, and the Romanians on the other side of Prut are already the citizens of EU. On the other hand, a retired policeman says that the unification is possible only by means of concrete actions, not by statements and protests which are being organised about ten times per year. The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, formally known as the Treaty of Non-aggression between Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, was a non-aggression treaty between the German Third Reich and the Soviet Union. Although officially labeled a "non-aggression treaty", the Molotov – Ribbentrop Pact, signed on August 23 1939, included a secret protocol, in which the independent countries of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania were divided into spheres of interest of the parties. The secret protocol explicitly assumed "territorial and political rearrangements" in the areas of these countries. Subsequently all the mentioned countries were invaded, occupied or forced to cede part of their territory to either the Soviet Union, Germany, or both. By means of the treaty the Soviet Union's interest and German lack of interest in Basarabia, a part of Romania, were acknowledged.
