Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian reiterated that Moldova is determined to settle the Transnistrian conflict exclusively peacefully. And this position is also supported by the Ukrainian counterparts. “There is no plan to strangle the Transnistrian region militarily or otherwise and this position is shared by Chisinau, Kiev and our international partners,” the official said after meeting with Ukraine’s Ambassador with Special Missions Păun Rohovei, IPN reports.

In a press briefing, Oleg Serebrian said that Ukraine is an essential partner in the Transnistrian settlement process. “We greatly appreciate the support Ukraine offers to our country, including on this dimension. I also referred to the stagnation in the negotiation process between Chisinau and Tiraspol witnessed last year and to the impact of the new Customs Code both on the economic relations between the two banks and on the social and economic situation in the Transnistrian region,” said the Deputy Premier.

Oleg Serebrian noted that all Chisinau wants is to gradually bring this region into the legal field of the Republic of Moldova. “The Transnistrian dispute will be settled exclusively peacefully, through dialogue, but there is no other solution than the full reintegration of this region into the Republic of Moldova. So, any other scenarios cannot be taken into account,” said the official.

Ambassador with Special Missions of Ukraine Păun Rohovei reiterated Ukraine’s position of unconditional support for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within the internationally recognized borders. “Hence the main goal of the Transnistrian settlement process – the reintegration of the Republic of Moldova, the reobtaining by Chisinau of its full rights over a part of its territory,” said Păun Rohovei.

Ukraine advocates settling this conflict exclusively through diplomacy. “Ukraine is and will be part of the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks. At the same time, we ascertained and agreed with our partners from the Republic of Moldova – today this international format existing de jure is not functional. The main reason for the non-functionality of this format is the presence within it of a state that no longer has either a moral or a legal right to take part in such negotiations. A barbaric state, violating international rules and law, attacked Ukraine in 2022 and continues to cause death, grief and sorrow on the territory of our state. Ukraine is firm in its positions not to sit at the negotiating table with the Russian Federation,” stated Păun Rohovei.
