Moldova made progress in implementing particular reforms, but there are yet concerns about some of the areas that need to be reformed, including the justice sector, where the fight against corruption must be a priority, European Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström said after a meeting with Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, IPN reports.
“It is very important that confidence exists, for making investments. Moldova must ensure the rule of law. We will support you and will be near you,” said the Commissioner.
Iurie Leanca said he discussed with Cecilia Malmström the possibility of experienced EU judges and prosecutors coming to Chisinau for several months for experience exchange. “If we manage to reach an agreement, we will be helped to reform justice and the prosecution service. The reforms in these sectors now meet with resistance on the part of the system,” he stated.
Iurie Leanca also had a meeting with European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Cioloş. The Commissioner told the news conference that the Association Agreement does not have the free trade component only. It also includes a financial assistance program for the farmers to benefit from investments.
On May 23, Cecilia Malmström will take part in a public forum entitled “Women for a European Moldova”. Afterward, Iurie Leanca and Cecilia Malmström will give a public lecturer at the State University of Moldova. Also on Friday, Dacian Cioloş will pay a visit to Comrat, where he will meet with the Bashkan of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal.
