In Chisinau, there are more than 25 large areas that need to be refurbished and improved and the central part of the city, which includes the historical nucleus, is the largest of these. The working out of a number of Zonal Urban Development Plans and of the General Urban Development Plan is the only accessible mechanism for legally and correctly developing these areas. These will specify how the territory can be used, how the public areas can be improved, how the green areas can be extended and everything that a durable and fit for living city means, Andrei Vatamaniuc, deputy head of the General Architecture and Land Relations Division, stated in the forum “Urbanism and Sustainable Development”, IPN reports.

“We have large and ambitious projects as strategies for developing the municipality of Chisinau and are to update the General Urban Development Plan. Until then, we have to develop other areas that the people expect to be improved in terms of quality of living, housing and business. Therefore, we cannot expect a plan to be deigned to solve what had to be solved during 20 years,” said Andrei Vatamaniuc.

He noted that authorities, together with the business community and citizens, for 12 years have worked out Zonal Urban Development Plans and modified the regulations so as to renovate these areas. Besides the development of areas, there are also problems related to the environment, quality of public areas, green areas, surface water and these require swift action.

“The central part of the city is not regulated. We need to update the relevant documents and know what was lost, what can be yet saved and to prioritize things so that we have approved high-quality documentation and enable those who have heritage buildings and those who intend to intervene in this specific area with protected status to act,” stated the functionary.
