Speeding and the failure of the drivers to adapt to the changing road conditions are the leading causes of traffic accidents in Moldova, according to information presented at a news conference held on Thursday ahead of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 21, Info-Prim Neo reports. Statistics show that one in seven accidents is caused by the drivers' failure to give priority at pedestrian crossings and one in ten accidents occurs under the influence. Boris Gherasim, Deputy Minister of Transport and Roads, this year the number of road traffic victims dropped by 18 percent, which may be attributed to the National Action Plan on Traffic Safety, which aims to reduce the number of victims in half by 2020. Boris Gherasim called on people to be more responsible: the stealing of about 600 road signs lately represents a direct cause of accidents. The deputy minister also informed that there are around 120 accident blackspots on Moldova's roads, where road traffic accidents have historically been concentrated. The Orhei-Rezina road has the most of them. The United Nations General Assembly declared the third Sunday in November every year as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims "as the appropriate acknowledgment for victims of road traffic crashes and their families".
