The tricolor on the Arch of Triumph

The action group Desteptarea (The Awakening) has raised the tricolor on the Arch of Triumph in Chisinau. The group is planning to repeat this action on the 13th day of each month, in order to make the society aware of the need to change article 13 of the Moldovan Constitution. The group members say the article should specify Romanian instead of Moldovan as the official language, Info-Prim Neo reports. An incident occurred during the event. Some security agents approached the group. “They told us the flags don’t allow them to watch the area with cameras, thus the flags were infringing national security. They asked us to raise the flags even higher or to remove them. We showed the agents our authorization from the City Hall, but they told us we could remain without it in an hour, if they wished it. The agents began to speak and behave quite brutally”, one of event organizers, Mircea Surdu, said. However, the conflict settled when the two sides agreed to move the flags at the corners of the Arch of Triumph. The action group “Desteptarea” was formed on June 28, 2010, and began its campaign regarding article 13 on August 31. The next event they plan is a march on Stefan cel Mare Avenue, on December 1, to celebrate the Greater Unification of Romanian principalities.
