97.1% of the 300 thousand Transnistrians that took part in the referendum from Sunday, September 17, from the eastern region of the Republic of Moldova voted for the independence of the region and the eventual unification with the Russian Federation. These results were announced by the Central Electoral Committee from the region. According to the presented information, only 2.3% of the plebiscite participants voted for the unification with the Republic of Moldova. While the required level of attendance was 50%+1, 78.6% of the region’s population took part in the yesterday referendum. Valeri Litkai, the so-called minister of foreign affairs of Transnistria, declared, and was cited by Russian and Tiraspol press, that the referendum results will be grounds for future negotiations in the Transnistrian conflict. According to him, Russia can now take into consideration the attitude of Transnistrian population in its foreign politics. Both the International Community and Chisinau have officially declared that they will not recognize the referendum organized by the separatist regime of Transnistria.
