The social-liberal parliamentary group expresses concern over the recent involutions of the Government in Chisinau concerning fundamental human rights and liberties and especially the freedom of press and freedom of speech. A statement by the Social-Liberal Party (PSL) condemns the anti-constitutional actions taken by the representatives of the law enforcement bodies, subordinated the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The employees of these bodies limited the representatives of the Liberal Party as well as a group of Writers’ Union members, in exercising their fundamental rights and freedoms established in the fundamental law. The group also condemns the fact that journalists from PRO TV Chisinau, DTV and TV7 were limited in their professional rights. “12 years after Moldova’s accession to the European Council, the situation of democracy and the principles of the law-based state continue to decay, this process being especially disagreeable in the last few weeks, as the electoral campaign approaches. “The Government is experiencing an agony”, the statement reads. The social-liberals consider that the actions of the policemen have been coordinated with their leadership, having the aim to hinder the 89th anniversary of the unification of Basarabia with Romania, celebrated on March 27. The signers of the statement consider that these actions continue the line of diplomatic attacks launched by communist authorities against Romania. In the context, social-liberal MPs will request the Parliament to investigate the cases of journalists’ intimidation and flagrant violation of citizens’ fundamental rights. The Government will be requested to dismiss the Minister of Internal Affairs, Gheorghe Papuc. At the same time, social-liberal MPs will send a statement to the European Council, governments of western states as well as the Liberal International, describing several cases proving the degradation of democracy in Moldova and requesting the monitoring of Moldovan authorities in their fulfilment of the assumed commitments.
