The period of civil service, as a substitution to the military service, has been reduced from two to one year. The law, passed by the Parliament in July, came into force on September 7, along with its publishing in the Official Monitor. For the persons who have a university degree the civil service lasts 6 months. The civil service represents an alternative for Moldovan nationals aged 18-27 years, who, for religious, ethical, moral, humanitarian or other similar reasons are not able to serve in the army. The following groups of people are absolved from the civil service: persons who lost their relatives while these were serving in the army, the clergy and persons physically unfit for military service. The civil service can be carried out in public institutions or commercial bodies operating on the national territory, in social and medical establishments, industrial constructions, road and railroad constructions, environmental bodies, agricultural associations, agricultural processing companies, in communal households, as well as in special structures of the civil service. The period for the civil service is included in the working experience of those enrolled. The civil service executants have the right to a 75% wage from the net income resulting from their work, an annual paid vacation, studies outside the work, medical and social insurances. Nationals who passed the civil service are enlisted until reaching 50 years in the civil service reserve list. The Government has the right to mobilise them in special or training cantonments and to involve them in liquidating the consequences of certain emergencies. At the moment, about 5500 persons are serving alternative service in Moldova.
