For the first time, a detainee released from illegal detention in the Transnistrian region has been arrested for crimes committed on the right bank. This is the case of Anton Malisev, who was released yesterday from the custody of the Transnistrian authorities. Promo-LEX lawyer Vadim Vieru, who represented him at his mother’s request, stated that he was not aware of this information and that the case represents a communication crisis, IPN reports.

"I did not know that there were search warrants issued in his name, and it was not my role to investigate this aspect, especially since the legal assistance I provided (at his mother's request) was unrelated to the drug trafficking case, but rather to his illegal detention in inadequate conditions and his access to medical care," said Vadim Vieru.

The Promo-LEX lawyer emphasized that individuals who commit crimes cannot be exempted from liability simply because they were convicted by an unrecognized administration. Each case must be reviewed individually and assessed through the lens of a transitional justice concept, which still needs to be developed and refined, according to Vadim Vieru.

Tiraspol released Anton Malisev yesterday after two years of detention. This action is part of the conditions imposed by Chisinau in exchange for the transit of gas to the Transnistrian region.

The Bureau for Reintegration Policies stated that there are no exact figures on detainees in the Transnistrian region, as it is a temporarily uncontrolled territory of the country and there is no exchange of information on this matter. However, various estimates suggest that nearly two thousand citizens are illegally incarcerated in the region.
