The secretary general of the Council of Europe (CoE), Terry Davis, ending his two-day visit to Moldova, has appreciated the progress made by Moldova in different areas, including in its getting closer to the European standards and norms. Terry Davis however specified that the successes achieved must not serve as a reason for the authorities to relax, Info-Prim Neo reports. CoE secretary general Friday met Moldovan president Vladimir Voronin. According to the latter's press service, Terry Davis has stated the Moldovan authorities are to firmly act to realize the democratic reforms, to strengthen the state of law and to ensure the observance of the fundamental human rights and freedoms. Terry Davis says the successes achieved by Moldova in modernizing the country and in performing the democratic transformations inspire to continue these processes after the upcoming parliamentary elections on April 5. Vladimir Voronin has said that in its 14th year of membership in the CoE, Moldova has the necessary political will to fully realize the commitments made before the forum in Strasbourg. “It will create the necessary conditions to pass, in the near future, to the post-monitoring period and the final halt of this process,” the head of the state said. The president decorated Terry Davis with the Order of Honor, “as a sign of profound gratitude for special contribution to the integration of Moldova in the European structures and in promoting its favorable image on the international arena.”
