Law enforcers have checked 10 thousand gun owners, 579 of whom were found to be in violation of the rules on how to own, carry and use weapons. As a result of the checks, police officers seized around 350 weapons and various ammunition, IPN reports.
For the admitted violations, gun owners risk fines ranging from 300 to 2500 lei.
The checks were carried out as part of special operation "Arsenal".
The General Inspectorate of Police says such checks are carried out regularly, at least once every six months.
Weapons may only be kept in safes or metal cabinets fixed to the wall or floor. Weapons must always be stored separately from ammunition and in an unloaded condition.
Owners are prohibited from using weapons when intoxicated. It is forbidden to give other persons access to the stored firearm.
