A child aged ten months died after being crushed by a TV set in the house. The tragedy happened before parents’ eyes in Cornesti, Ungheni. Natalia Munteanu, director of the local medical center, has told IPN that the TV set was on a nightstand. The boy, who only learned to walk, pulled a cable and the TV set fell onto him. The ambulance doctors could not save him.

According to Natalia Munteanu, the boy was the only child in the family. He was long-awaited. Both of the parents were at home when the tragedy struck, but could not avoid it. Parents are warned that the TV sets must be fixed well and not on nightstands, but on places that are inaccessible to children.

Nicolae Starciuc, director of the Municipal Children’s Hospital “Valentin Ignatenco”, said that such cases occur almost weekly because the parents leave the children without supervision and do not think about the possible dangers. As a result of such accidents, the children are rushed to the hospital with serious fractures, injury to internal organs and can even die.

Last year, a child aged one year and two months was crushed by the nightstand and the TV set. This April, a child needed surgery after a TV set fell onto him.

According to the National Health Management Center, 2,900 children aged between 0 and 5 suffered injuries in Moldova last year. Sixty of them died.
