Ten general education institutions were reorganized in 2018 in accordance with the decisions made by the local public authorities. According to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, no school was closed this year.
In a response to an inquiry made by IPN, the Ministry said a lyceum was reorganized into a secondary school. Three secondary schools became branches and another three secondary schools were reorganized into school-kindergarten. A primary school became a branch and another primary school was restructured into primary school-kindergarten. Also, a branch secondary school was reorganized into a secondary school.
In 2018, there was founded an education institution of secondary school type in Ungheni and opened three private education institutions in the municipality of Chisinau – two lyceums and a primary school-kindergarten.
A year ago, Minister of Education Monica Babuc said hasty and event mistaken actions were taken in the process of optimizing the network of education institutions of the country. The Ministry will thus review the process based on four types of indicators. In 2010-2017, 218 schools in Moldova were closed, while another 303 were reorganized owing to the low number of students, lack of teachers and the negative demographical forecasts for the localities were the schools were optimized.
