Teens in 11 summer camps to be taught about reproductive health

For the fifth consecutive year, Y-PEER Moldova and the Ministry of Education organize a campaign to inform the young people in summer camps about a healthy lifestyle. The campaign lasts throughout August, Info-Prim Neo reports. “It is a traditional campaign informing the young people about a healthy lifestyle, especially as regards reproductive health. This is a subject that the young people should know about,” Veronica Velescu, who is in charge of organizing the campaign, has told Info-Prim Neo. Twenty-two volunteer educators of Y-PEER Moldova will carry out information activities for 300 teens aged between 14 and 16, who are resting in 11 summer camps, including two in Vadul lui Voda (Floricica, Neptun), one in Sadova, Calarasi, and the camp Miorita in Ivancea, Orhei. “We will tell tem about the priorities of abstinence, which are the symptoms of a sexually transmitted disease and the consequences of having unprotected sex and about the necessity of seeing a doctor in difficult situations. These topics are important for an adolescent that is close to maturity,” Veronica Velescu said. Besides information activities, the campaign will involve plays about reproductive health staged by social theater teams. Y-PEER, the Youth Peer Education Network, is a groundbreaking and comprehensive youth-to-youth initiative pioneered by UNFPA. Y-PEER is a network of more than 500 non-profit organizations and governmental institutions; its membership includes thousands of young people who work in the many areas surrounding adolescent sexual and reproductive health. At national and regional levels, the network is supported by such partners as MTV-Staying Alive, FHI, Youth NET, USAID, UNAIDS, WHO, UNICEF, UNESCO, WB, UNODC.
