In Mereni, Anenii Noi district, a local taxi service has been launched. Now, its residents can call a taxi at any time and travel within or outside the village.
Pavel Ursu, owner of the taxi company, told Info-Prim Neo the idea came from people who complained about having to walk a lot. The village is big and the Chisinau-Mereni route bus doesn’t cover all areas.
Pavel Ursu said the company would begin with two cars and would get more if needed. Taxis will travel both within and outside the village, even to Chisinau. A ride in the village costs 15 lei, and outside it, an additional 4 lei/km will be charged.
According to the owner, the number of requests is pretty low, but he is sure the service will grow more popular. He mentioned 70% of the rides are in the village. On workdays, most requests come in the morning, while during weekend, most are in the evening.
Mayor of Mereni Mihail Caragi saluted the initiative because the village was big and people had to walk 3 kilometers from one end to the other.
Mereni is a 450 hectares large village with 6300 inhabitants, 30 kilometers from Chisinau. Until now, no similar services have been known in Moldovan villages.
