The deadline for presenting tax returns for 2017 for private individuals this year is April 30, in accordance with the changes made to the Tax Code. Given the nonworking days in the period, the tax returns will be accepted until May 2 inclusive. The deadline for legal entities and private individuals that practice entrepreneurial activities is March 26, IPN reports.

Olga Golban, division head at the State Tax Service, told a news conference that everyone can submit tax returns, but the procedure is mandatory for the tax payers who get salaries at two or more jobs or get a salary and also another income that is taxed at the source of payment and also for those who earn other revenues than salaries larger than 31 140 lei. The incomes from dividends, royalties, gaming and from promotional campaigns do not need to be declared.

The tax rates for the incomes earned in 2017 are: 7% for incomes of up to 31 140 lei and 18% for larger incomes.

The personal exemption is 10 140 lei. The persons who took part in the Chernobyl cleanup, in the war for defending the territorial integrity of Moldova and in the Afghanistan war and the persons with childhood disabilities and others will enjoy a personal exemption of 15 840 lei. The exemption for children and other maintained persons is 2 340 lei.

The private individuals who will want to transfer 2% of the income tax to noncommercial and religious organizations could do it only after they submit the tax return and pay the income tax. The list of these organizations (594 at present) is available on the Ministry of Justice’s website.

The taxpayers can also ask for a “prefilled income statement”, completed with data from the State Tax Service’s database, from local tax offices. This is also available on the Service’s website and can be used for electronic tax returns. A video on the website explains the procedure.
