The samples taken from patients with atypical forms of COVID-19 were sent to Germany for determining the presence or absence of the new Delta and Lambda variants. Acting minister of health Tatiana Zatîc said only the presence of the British Alfa variant was confirmed in Moldova. According to her, to prevent the importation of the new variants, the Moldovan authorities have made the border crossing restrictions harsher, IPN reports.

The health authorities said the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the recent past is due to the non-observance of the sanitary norms on the election day and the day prior to the July 11 elections. Also, many Moldovans return infected from abroad after vacationing there.

“The number of fatalities the past week doubled and this points to the gravity of the disease in the infected patients. Such a development is due to a number of reasons. We had the election day and the electoral period. Furthermore, the citizens in summer relax and the imposed measures are not obeyed. It is also the period of vacations that are spent abroad,” Tatiana Zatîc stated in the program “Moldova Live” on the public TV channel.

According to Tatiana Zatîc, the presence of the new variants Delta and Lambda hasn’t been confirmed yet. However, atypical developments of the disease have been witnessed in the recent past and this makes the epidemiologists sound the alarm.

“The Delta and Lambda variants are much more dangerous and much more contagious. Therefore, the border crossing restrictions were toughened up so as to stop the cases of import. We are now waiting for the equipment that will help detect the new variants,” stated Tatiana Zatîc.

As many as 84 persons were confirmed with SARS-COV-2 in Moldova on July 20. Of the 279 persons confirmed with COVID-19 who are now in hospitals, 53 are in a very serious state.
