One of the two men who are suspected of beating to death Dumitru Jomir from Costești on New Year’s Eve has been in the attention of the police for over two years. In a news conference on January 10, Minister of the Interior Pavel Voicu said that six criminal cases were started against this in 2017-2019: five over theft and one over hooliganism. Also, the 21-year-old man was involved in 16 cases of contravention, IPN reports.

Pavel Voicu related that a minor aged 16 was also implicated in the beating. This committed his first offense, but was the first who hit the victim. The fatal blows were given by the man aged 21. Both of the suspects admitted their guilt.

When the incident was reported, the local police officers were in the neighboring village, where another beating occurred. These arrived at the scene in about 50 minutes and found four witnesses there. The victim was being taken to the hospital. The suspects were identified shortly afterward, following the examination of recordings from a surveillance camera and based on witnesses’ statements.

It was established that about 20 persons attended the confrontation, but didn’t intervene. They came closer only when they saw that the young man could not stand up.

According to the minister, there is sufficient evidence to bring the suspects to justice. They are both liable to punishment, but the minor is under 18 and cannot be arrested. The 21-year-old man was remanded in custody for 30 days. The minor aged 16 is investigated outside custody, but must present himself whenever he is summoned by the investigation body.
