Romania is concerned about the security situation in the Black Sea Region amidst Russia’s war against Ukraine and the external interference in the democratic process in the Republic of Moldova. Nevertheless, the Romanian authorities assure that they will continue to act firmly, cohesively and efficiently, alongside their allies and partners, so as to promote security and stability. This is the desideratum of the Supreme Council of National Defense of Romania that was convoked by President Klaus Iohannis at the Cotroceni Palace on Tuesday, IPN reports.

“The meeting centered primarily on the security situation in the Black Sea Region and the implications for Romania amidst the most recent developments in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine, of the external interference in the democratic process in the Republic of Moldova and of the prospects of continuing the support of NATO, the European Union and the international community for Ukraine,” says a press release issued by the Romanian presidential administration.

According to the Romanian authorities, the ensuring of national security remains the basic line of action, while the supporting of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova contributes directly to strengthening Romania’s security.

The Council members reiterated that Romania must ensure the necessary support for the vulnerable partners from the region, namely the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, arguing the necessity of stepping up the approaches of support for the Republic of Moldova at European and international levels.

“Since the war broke out on our borders, the Republic of Moldova has been the target of pressure exerted at multiple levels with the aim of diminishing the support stated by its citizens for a firm pro-European course for democracy and prosperity. Furthermore, the Republic of Moldova is the target of hybrid destabilization actions of unprecedented intensity and complicity,” runs the press statement.

The development of the military aviation of Romania and the strengthening of the air defense and missile defense capabilities for the protection of the own forces were another important subjects discussed at the meeting. The Council members approved the concept for building the operational capabilities of air defense with multirole fifth-generation fighters.
