A group of supporters and members of the Shor Party gathered outside of the Ciocana District Court, where they demanded that MP Marina Tauber be acquitted or at least released on bail. They also believe that President Maia Sandu and the Government must resign.
Orhei District head Dinu Țurcanu said that Tauber’s controversial removal from the November 2021mayoral race in Bălți was “the first nail in the political coffin of the current government”. He expressed his hope that his colleague will have a fair trial.
Radu Bușilă, mayor of Piatra commune, Orhei district, claimed that Tauber was never in charge of the Shor Party’s finances and therefore it was impossible for her to falsify the party’s financial report, of which she stands accused. He believes Tauber’s case is “intentionally and abusively” protracted by prosecutors and that there is no reason to detain her.
Appearing in court, Tauber told reporters she hoped for “a fair decision”.
The Ciocana Court assembled to decide whether or not to extend Tauber’s preventive arrest. A decision was supposed to be delivered last Friday, but prosecutors requested an adjournment.
On July 21, the lawmaker was stripped of parliamentary privilege before being arrested. Subsequently she has been charged with two offenses: knowingly accepting illegal financing for the Shor Party from an organized criminal group; and falsifying the party’s financial report for the first half of 2022 with the intention of withholding actual incomes and expenses.
