When a person suffers unbearable psychological pain, suicide is not a solution. The solution is to talk about the pain, said psychologist Liuba Ceban, the founder of the Green Line for Suicide Prevention, being quoted by IPN.

“Suicide can be committed anytime, but attempt to given chances to your pain so that this leaves by a healthy method, without putting your life and health in danger. I think it’s great that there are such solutions, that you can talk about your pain and the accumulated frustrations, about the distresses of your soul, your life,” Liuba Ceban stated on Facebook Live.

During September 8-11, the Green Line for Suicide Prevention stages the Suicide Prevention Week under the theme “Suicide is not a solution!”. The event is held in connection with World Suicide Prevention Day that is celebrated on September 10. According to the organizers, this day is marked to underline the importance of emotionally supporting the most vulnerable persons affected by the realities of the pandemic as a measure to prevent the danger of suicide in the short and long runs. The events are organized as part of the friendship project “You Are Not Alone” that is supported by the U.S. Embassy in Moldova.

According to the police, 260 suicides and 454 attempted suicides were recorded in Moldova in the first eight months of this year. The suicide rates are the highest among teens. A previous suicide attempt is considered the most serious risk factor for suicide.

The General Police Inspectorate came with a series of measures by which suicide can be prevented. These refer to the policies to reduce the use of alcohol, to early detect persons with mental disorders or who take drugs and treat them, to train medical staff to determine and manage suicidal behavior, to supervise persons who attempted suicide and provide community support.

According to the Ministry of Health, in Moldova there are
40 mental health community centers and 41 youth-friendly health centers Youth Klinic at primary medical assistance institutions in all the districts and municipalities. The centers provide multidisciplinary consultative services in mental health and organize teaching-methodological activities to promote healthy life habits for teens, specialists, parents and other members of the community.

In 2019, the mental health community centers provided psychiatric and psychological assistance and mental health care for about 215,000 persons. The friendly health centers Youth Klinic offered psychological assistance in about 10,000 cases of prevention of mental health problems in teens, including in order to prevent suicide. In 2020, 2,000 young people benefitted from online psychological counseling organized by the Youth Klinic network.
