The most recent accomplishments in administering the Moldovan courts of law and the best international practices in the field will be discussed in an international conference taking place in Chisinau on October 23 and 24. The event was organized with the support of USAID, IPN reports.

In the opening of the conference, Minister of Justice Oleg Efrim said the government is making considerable effort to reform the justice sector. It was decided to raise the salaries of judges, but the requirements towards judges were also increased. Regretfully, not all the judges meet yet these requirements and thus the people do not have confidence in the courts of law. Even in some of the EU member states, the distrust in the judicial system is at a high level. Efforts should be made further so as to remedy the situation. Also, courts’ budgets were augmented by 73% compared with 2012.

Kara McDonald, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau, said the organization of the conference represents direct support provided by the United States in reforming the justice sector of Moldova. The modern administration of the courts of law is a key element in improving the people’s perception of the legal system. The people will support the investments made in reforming the justice sector if they see that these investments are managed correctly.

The international conference “Modern administration of the courts of law – key element of the judicial reform” involves members of the Supreme Council of Magistrates, experts from Romania, Ukraine, the U.S., the Netherlands, Albania, and Australia and presidents of national courts of law.
