Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov said the sugar is likely to get cheaper after the sugar beet is harvested this autumn. He said the crop this year is very good, as in Russia and Ukraine, and thus the sugar prices can drop, Info-Prim Neo reports. “This year, the sugar beet harvest is projected to be 40 tonnes per hectare and total about 900,000 tonnes of sugar beet from which there will be made more than 100,000 tonnes of sugar,” said Vasile Bumacov. He also said that the harvesting of sugar beet will start later because there was no precipitation. “The producers will begin collecting the beet after it rains so that the combines could work easier. Now the land is dry and we will sustain losses of we start the harvest,” said the minister. A kilogram of sugar now costs about 16-17 lei.
