The company Sudzucker Moldova obtained a grant of €140,000 for purchasing co-generation equipment. The grant agreement was signed on December 10. The equipment will be installed at the biogas plant that was opened in September, IPN reports.

The plant’s projected annual processing capacity is 7.3 million cubic meters of biogas, with 51% of methane, produced from 55,000 tonnes of waste obtained after processing the sugar beet.

“The processing and transformation of the sugar beet remnants into biogas will enable to reduce the purchases of natural gas needed in the production process by 15%. In the period between the sugar beet processing seasons, the electric power produced from biogas will be partially used to supply the infrastructure of the sugar factory in Drochia, while the rest will be distributed trough the national electricity network,” said Octavian Armasu, a member of the Administration Committee of Sudzucker Moldova.

Sudzucker Moldova was selected from among five agroindustrial companies that applied for this grant, said the director of the Energy Efficiency Agency Mihai Stratan. The grant was offered within the EU – UNDP Energy and Biomass Project.
