The Coalition “Vocea Romilor” (“Voice of the Roma”) launched a campaign to collect success stories of the Roma women. These stories will be published in a magazine that will be distributed free to different state institutions. According to the initiators of this campaign, the goal is to change the public perception of the Roma women, IPN reports.

The campaign was launched within an open discussion on the myths and realities about the Roma women through the angle of the successful Roma women. The representative of “Vocea Romilor” Elena Sarbu said the magazine will be issued once in three months and will be distributed to different institutions in the country, including libraries. During three months, the stories will be published online weekly and monthly. “We hope that by this magazine, we will reach the hearts of all the Moldovan citizens because we are also women and the Roma women count,” stated Elena Sarbu.

The representative of UN Women Ulziisuren Jamsran said that she wants the success stories that were made public during the discussion to become known to all the women of the Roma community. “For us, it is very important to be proud of these successes and to urge our children to achieve such nice successes. The campaign that you launched today must not only become a good leverage that should offer a maximum of stories that the girls will read and know, but should also be a kind of guidebook,” stated Ulziisuren Jamsran.

Nighina Azizov, adviser in the staff of Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici, said it is important to show as many positive examples as possible because more results can be obtained owing to these. “If the Roma girls see that you have the capacity to change something at the local level, when we speak about political involvement or in the jobs you have now, they will have more confidence in themselves and will follow your example,” she noted.

The campaign will be carried out with the support of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and UN Women Moldova.
