A number of streets, basements and houses were flooded in Chisinau after the rain that fell in the afternoon of June 29. The local authorities said they will provide assistance from the municipal reserve fund to persons whose homes were flooded. A working meeting centering on the consequences of rain was held at the Chisinau City Hall on June 30, IPN reports.
Deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu said rainwater inundated 25 apartments and four private houses. The City Hall and the Botanic district head’s office were also flooded. The wind downed a number of trees. One of these fell on a gas pipe in Codru town. Several vehicles were damaged. Owing to the rain, trolleybuses travelled with delays of 20-40 minutes, especially on the streets Calea Iesilor and Muncesti.
According to the deputy mayor, the pluvial drainage system should be unblocked where it is clogged. Some of the business entities illegally connected themselves to the municipal drainage system. The consequences of rain could have been less serious if the Byk riverbed had been cleaned. The local authorities are considering the possibility of starting the cleaning of the riverbed this year and of implementing a project to extend the pluvial drainage area.
Acting mayor of Chisinau Ruslan Codreanu said the allocations to affected persons will be provided based on assessments carried out by district commissions.
The torrential rain caused floods in other parts of the country too. In Gherman village of Ungheni district, the water entered ten house yards. Rescuers helped pump water out of cellars and yards. There were built levees along streets to prevent floods. Farmers in Hancesti, Floresti and Ialoveni districts reported damage. Local emergencies commissions are to gauge the extent of the done damage.
According to the General Inspectorate for Emergencies, no casualties were reported as a result of the heavy rain.
