The Strategy “Chisinau Green City”, which forms part of the framework plan for green cities, was presented at the 2022 Economic Forum “Invest in Chisinau”. The goal of the strategy is to improve the ecological performance and social and economic conditions in the capital city, IPN reports.

Among the main subjects discussed in the event were the modernization of the water supply and sewerage networks, protection and development of green urban areas, rehabilitation of the Byk River, energy sustainability and efficiency and waste management.

The experience of the French city Grenoble, which is the 2022 European Green Capital, was given as an example. Experts also presented the best practices for revitalizing the cities provided by the Institute for Urban and Regional Development of Warsaw. According to the experts, any revitalization measure is taken together with the inhabitants of the city, who not only take part in public consultations but also financially contribute to the implementation of projects.

The heads of enterprises that provide services in the municipality of Chisinau, such as SA “Apă-Canal Chișinău”, “Autosalubritate” and the Green Areas Association, in the forum presented possibilities of cooperating with national business entities with the aim of obtaining benefits for both of the sides.

The forum also discussed the General Urban Development Plan of the municipality of Chisinau. The last such plan was designed back in 1989. An intermediary plan was approved in 2007. “Regrettably, the speed of changes in the real life of the municipality and the provisions of the general plan contained differed considerably. The document became nominal and the city remained without real development instruments,” said mayor general Ion Ceban.

After analyzing international practices, the participants reached the conclusion that a sustainable socioeconomic development strategy is needed on which to base the short- and long-term actions of the municipality. This will serve as a roadmap for working out the General Urban Development Plan whose end goal will be to prevent the use of urbanism derogatorily.

“To ensure a framework favorable for investments, we are working on a number of zonal urban development plans for locations that pose an increased interest. This will facilitate the development of the city,” stated Ion Ceban.
