Ukraine will win this war and the conditions of a peace agreement should be formulated by Kyiv, said the Ambassador of UK to Moldova Steven Fisher. In the same connection, the diplomat said that NATO is a defensive military alliance that discourages aggression and it is the citizens of the Republic of Moldova who should decide if they want the status of neutrality to be renounced or not, IPN reports.
The British ambassador expressed his conviction that Ukraine will win Russia’s war of aggression against it. The British government offers Kyiv all the necessary support for scoring a swift victory.
“It will be probably a long-term conflict. I hope it won’t be like this. The problem is historical. Russia is no longer an empire, but acts as if it is an empire. From my viewpoint, the war will end when Russia accepts that it cannot impose its will on countries that were part of the empire. We firmly believe that Ukraine will win. The question is, when this will happen. As our minister of foreign affairs noted, the conditions of the peace agreement should come from Kyiv. After our American friends, the UK is the second country in terms of the size of assistance for Ukraine,” Steven Ficher stated in the talk show “Reflection Points” on Vocea Basarabiei channel.
The diplomat noted that given the security crisis in the region, the decision on Moldova’s eventual entry into NATO should be taken by the citizens. NATO is a military alliance that offers protection to all the member states, while British society firmly supports the membership in NATO.
“NATO is a defensive political-military alliance. It is a defensive umbrella for the protection of its members. NATO ensures collective security. An attack on a member state is considered an attack on all the members. NATO discourages aggression and keeps peace. We cannot speak in the name of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova about entry into NATO, but my country, the UK, is a NATO member and we are glad about this. In British society, there are no discussions on the issue. The subject of departure from the European Union was a sensitive one for us and we voted democratically for Brexit. But there are no discussions as regards NATO. I think in the case of a poll, 80% of our citizens would vote for NATO,” said Steven Ficher.
Formed in 1949 with the signing of the Washington Treaty, NATO is a security alliance of 30 countries from North America and Europe. NATO’s fundamental goal is to safeguard the Allies’ freedom and security by political and military means. Negotiations on the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO are ongoing.
