It will be very hard for the people of the Republic of Moldova to identify the most appropriate candidate who will represent them because Moldova witnesses enormous social tension, Liberal MP Stefan Vlas said in the electoral public debate “Specific traits of presidential elections 2016: vision of parliamentary parties” of the series “What kind of President is society looking for? What society does the President need?”, organized by IPN News Agency

According to the MP, as a result of the theft of the century, the people got into despair and no longer trust the current political class. The parliamentary alliance that undertook to continue on the path of European integration does it utmost to restore the people’s confidence and to use all the state instruments to maintain stability so that the country continues to develop.

The people must know what direction we will follow after the presidential elections and the position of the future President is thus very important. “The people must understand what they want and what the country’s course will be. The candidates can be divided into those who just want to become Head of State and those who want to change something, to change the country’s course,” stated Stefan Vlas.

In the post of President, he sees a powerful, combative person who will be heard by the people, in Parliament and in all the state bodies. He/she must have an own viewpoint and must demand that the state authorities make effort to improve things.

Stefan Vlas anticipates that confrontations can appear between the President, Government and Parliament, but everything depends on what kind of candidate the people choose. “If they choose a more loyal and more coward person, ‘battles’ will not exist and everything will continue in the same way and nothing will change. If a powerful candidate with a strong character is chosen, these ‘battles’ could reappear,” he stated.

According to the MP, it will be hard for the future President to manage things in Moldova because it was always hard with the governments that ruled during the last few years, especially in the latest conjuncture. The President does not have the necessary powers to be an ‘iron hand’ by law so as to force the state institutions to work for the benefit of the people. “We consider things in the country will go well when the country is reunified,” said Sefan Vlas.

He also said that no matter who of the candidates is elected President, this should be recognized and all the state institutions should cooperate with this because the stability in our country depends a lot on the Head of State. “I bank on the most correct election campaign, without selling and buying,” he stated.

The September 21 public debate is the 60th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged by IPN with the assistance of the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
