The former Transnistrian leader Yevgheny Shevchuk didn’t leave the territory of the Republic of Moldova because he does not have too many places where he could hide, ex-president of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights of Moldova Stefan Uratu stated in the program “People’s Council” on TV10 channel, IPN reports.
According to Stefan Uratu, most probably the former leader will be searched by particular Russian bodies. That’s why for him it is better to hide in Moldova, where he has business partners with whom he shared assets. “It was mentioned not only once that US$ 150 million is divided between the left and right sides of the Nistru for electricity and gas. I think that among the current leaders, Igor Dodon can guarantee particular asylum for him here, and there is also Vlad Plahotniuc, who is also interested in this,” stated Stefan Uratu.
Historian Anatol Petrenko said the police should have arrested Yevgheny Shevchuk when this reached the right bank of the Nistru. “I drew the conclusion that the Republic of Moldova, despite the state bodies it has, cannot hold accountable a criminal,” stated Anatol Petrenko.
The ex-Transnistrian leader Yevgheny Shevchuk on a social networking site wrote that he withdrew to Chisinau. He is accused in the region of corruption and abuse of power in managing a stabilization fund organized by him in the form of a nonprofit association. The Supreme Soviet of the breakaway republic of Transnistria withdrew his immunity. Later Shevchuk wrote that he left the region because he was persecuted by an influential businessman there.
