European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Štefan Füle will visit Moldova next week. As the previous years, he will come to Chisinau on Europe Days celebrated on May 18 and 19, IPN reports. According to Radio Free Europe, Štefan Füle, who on May 9 was at the station’s head office in Prague, said it will be a private visit.

Last week, Štefan Füle and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton issued a statement, expressing their concern about the adoption by the Moldovan Parliament of amendments to the Law on the Constitutional Court, which enable the lawmakers to dismiss the constitutional judges. The two officials agreed with the position of the President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio, who criticized the amendments, saying they run counter to the European standards on constitutional justice and clearly violate Article 137 of the Constitution of Moldova.

The President of Moldova refused to promulgate these changes and sent the bill back to Parliament for reexamination. If the legislative body adopts it repeatedly, the head of state will be obliged to promulgate it. The amendments were passed by the votes of the Communist and Liberal-Democratic lawmakers.
