The legislation will be amended so that the statute of limitations is applied only for the criminal investigation not yet in the trial. There are situations when judges delay the examination of the case and the statute of limitations expires, President Maia Sandu stated after the meeting of the Supreme Security Council.

President Sandu noted that the Council discussed the leaks of information from particular cases, which affect the investigation and generate the people’s distrust in the law enforcement agencies. There will be worked out a stricter mechanism of accountability for information leaking and for insufficient documentation of some of the cases. This leads to the discrediting of the investigation.

Another subject discussed was the lack of end results in cases of grand corruption. According to President Sandu, there are cases that are sent to court, but nothing is heard about them later. The Supreme Council of Magistracy was asked to come up with a solution concerning cases of grand corruption until the end of this month even if this means the creation of a specialized court or of specialized panels.

The members of the Supreme Security Council also discussed the necessity of amending the law so as to eliminate the abuse of rights. According to Maia Sandu, there are cases when the lawyers delay the cases, using methods that are within the law. The legislation will be amended so as to eliminate the possibilities of abusing.
