Over 1,000 students of the State University of Moldova (USM) that did not pass the summer exams run the risk of being expelled. The rector’s office has already given them advance warning. Elena Muraru, pro-rector for teaching activities at USM, told Info-Prim Neo that the students, most of whom went to work in the US and the UK through the Work and Travel programme, have one more chance to pass the exams during the additional session scheduled for October 17-30. Though many of the ones that went abroad are budgetary students that had good academic results until present, they will not receive awards from the state anymore. “It is the responsibility of the parents and students that decided to leave and not of the state or education establishment,” Muraru said. According to the pro-rector, the university’s rectorship had a tolerant attitude towards the students that missed the classes, but now they will take tougher action because the agreements with the firms that organized the departures do not stipulate that the students can ignore the exams. Moreover, according to the agreements the students work abroad during the summer months only. “Those that intended to go abroad should have passed the exams first because many of them departed in June,” Muraru said. USM is, for the time being, the only institution that issued warnings of expulsion.
