In the last few years the state of Moldova’s small rivers has aggravated and the Moldova Waters Agency blames in particular the local authorities for not properly using the protective strips of land along these rivers, which continue to run dry and disappear.

In a response to IPN, the Agency said climate change and the unauthorized construction of ponds in the river basins also take their toll.

The Agency says the future of small rivers depend largely on closely coordinated efforts among all users of water and the authorities based on an integrated management approach.

Moldova has over 3,600 permanent rivers and streams totaling 16,000 kilometers in length. Nine rivers are longer than 100 kilometers, and the remained are under 10 kilometers long.
