Parliament today accepted the Government’s proposal to extend the national state of emergency in connection with the war in Ukraine for another 60 days.
Speaking before lawmakers, Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița recalled that the state of emergency was introduced on February 24 as the war broke out in Ukraine. Then the Government proposed a set of measures to deal with this crisis, which concurred with the gas and coronavirus crises.
According to Gavrilița, there is no improvement of the situation in sight.
“Considering all these aspects, as well as the risk that the humanitarian crisis could aggravate, the threats to national security, the continuation of the crisis regarding electricity and gas supply, pursuant to Article 15 of Law no. 212 on the State of Emergency, Siege and War, we request Parliament to extend the state of emergency for a period of 60 days, starting on April 25”, said Natalia Gavrilița.
Shor Party MP Vadim Fotescu stated that no other neighbors of Ukraine declared a national state of emergency as Moldova has done. According to him, during this period there has been no measure that couldn’t have been adopted by usual procedure.
The extension was adopted by the vote of 55 PAS lawmakers. The Shor group abstained, while the Communists-Socialists staged a walkout earlier, in protest at the decision to strip their colleague Radu Mudreac of immunity from prosecution.
