Parliament prolonged the state of emergency for another 60 days as from August 3. The decision was taken in the last sitting of the spring session of Parliament. The Government’s proposal was examined in the absence of the opposition MPs, who boycotted the siting, IPN reports.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean started the presentation of the draft decision by showing videos of Ukrainian localities affected by the war. “I would like everyone to see these images and to realize that this war is close to us. Now it came even closer as civilian infrastructure is being shelled in Odessa, in Reni, where Russia attacks our neighbors. They do not only kill, but also create difficulties in living. This affects us too,” stated the official.
According to Premier Recean, throughout the state of emergency the Government used this instrument strictly in order to solve citizens’ problems and problems related to migration. “The necessity of extending the state of emergency results from the fact that the war persists, is yet close to us and we and the government need to intervene promptly when national security is in danger or when we must ensure the continuation of energy and gas supply services,” noted Dorin Recean.
Under the decision, the state of emergency will not affect the conduct of elections.
The July 31 sitting of Parliament is the last one of the spring-summer session of 2023. It involves only the PAS group as the BCS group left in protest after their proposal to exclude the draft decision on the prolongation of the state of emergency and a number of other bills from the agenda were rejected by the PAS majority group. The independent MPs of the outlawed Shor Party boycott the sittings.
The state of emergency was declared on February 24, 2022 and was extended for a number of times since then, with the last such decision being adopted at the end of May.
