The Communists&Socialists parliamentary group is asking for a constitutional review of a law that bans the black-and-orange ribbon, known as “of St. George”, among other symbols of military aggression.

The lawmakers Adrian Lebedinschi and Grigore Novac argue that the ribbon is no threat to public order or moral values and that the ban violates freedom of expression and opinion.

Lebedinschi and Novac claim that the bill had not been properly discussed before being put to a vote and its passage was “anti-democratic”. “Such laws are intended to destroy historical memory and divide society, and the government should bear the consequences”, they declared.

The first attempt by the Communist&Socialists to challenge the ban at the Constitutional Court was unsuccessful as it was not yet a law.

Earlier today, Police Chief Viorel Cernăuțean said that everybody is equal before the law and those disrespecting the ban will face fines. Over 60 cases of non-compliance have been recorded to date.
