The radish, carrots and vegetable marrows can pose a threat to health as they are high in nitrate content. Specialists of the Chisinau Public Health Center took samples for tests and established that the Moldovan vegetables and an imported vegetable had a higher nitrate content, IPN reports.
According to the Chisinau Public Health Center, the radish has the highest content of nitrates. Samples were taken from a number of selling points. The marrows grown in Moldova turned out to contain more nitrates than the imported one. Cucumbers also have a high nitrate content.
Specialists warn that the fruit and vegetables that contain nitrates become noxious to humans when they are eaten in exaggerated amounts. The nitrates affect liver and stomach cells and contribute to developing lymphatic, stomach, colon, esophageal and liver cancers.
If a product with a high content of nitrates was eaten, citrus fruit or vegetables rich in vitamin C should be immediately consumed as these annihilate a part of the ingested nitrates. The nitrate content of a vegetable can be reduced by boiling and pickling, by keeping this in water for an hour or by removing its skin.
