Special commission for election of head of state will recommend Parliament to change election date

The special commission for the election of the President of Moldova will suggest choosing another election date to the Parliament. Initially, the head of state was to be elected on October 23, Info-Prim Neo reports. Also, within ten days, the commission will submit a set of amendments to the law on the procedure for electing the head of state to the legislative body. After the commission’s meeting on October 21, its chairman, MP Ion Plesca said that the legislation concerning the election of the President contains shortcomings and ambiguities. Communist MP Igor Muntean, who is a member of the special commission for the election of the head of state, said that the members of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) do not trust each other and thus could not field one more candidate for the presidency so as to observe the law. Liberal-Democratic MP Vitalie Nagacevschi replied that the AEI did not want to play theater in the Parliament as it happened in the case of the candidates Duca and Groppa (the contestants proposed by the PCRM for the basic candidate fielded by the party at the previous elections – e.n.). Under the Parliament’s decision, the President of Moldova was to be elected on October 23. Only one candidate was registered by the October 17 deadline. The AEI put forward the leader of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu. The Constitution does not say exactly how many candidates should take part in the election. But the Constitutional Court recommended that there should be at least two candidates.
