The United Moldova Party’s (PMU) appeal to the Constitutional Court against the Parliament’s decision to lower the minimum voter turnout in referenda from three-fifths to one third won’t succeed, thinks Speaker Mihai Ghimpu. “United Moldova has no chance, as the Venice Commission recommends this minimum rate shouldn’t exist at all. Let’s not speculate with numbers. The 1/3 minimum turnout doesn’t mean only 1/3 of voters will participate. I’m sure their number will rise to more than 50%”, Mihai Ghimpu stated. PMU leader Vladimir Turcan argued the Parliament’s decision would result in a lower voter turnout in the referendum.
