The Moldovan authorities are ready to establish efficient cooperation relations with the administration of Gagauzia, Head of Parliament Andrian Candu said after a meeting with the new Bashkan (Governor) of Gagauzia Irina Vlah on April 1. For her part, Irina Vlah said that she counts on the Moldovan authorities’ assistance in implementing a number of initiatives, IPN reports.
“The election campaign and political struggles in the region came to an end and we enter a new stage of cooperation and work. Ensuring cooperation at all the levels of power and, surely, with the administration of the Gagauz autonomous region is the most important thing,” stated Adrian Candu.
He noted that the inauguration of the Bashkan will most probably take place after the Easter holidays. Afterward, a working group consisting of members of Moldova’s Parliament and of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will be set up to adjust the legislation on the special legal status of Gagauzia so that the legal framework works well.
Irina Vlah said they discussed the keeping of the Gagauz language and identity and the necessity of a program in this respect as well as the allocation of 5% of the Road Fund to Gagauzia and the provision of support to the farmers of the region.
Irina Vlah ran independently, but in the election campaign was openly supported by the Party of Socialists. According to the Comrat Election Commission, Irina Vlah polled 32,543 votes, which is 51.01% of the ballot. The voter turnout was 58.1%.
