The Soroca district court sentenced a young man who robbed and killed his grandparents together with another four persons to six years in jail. The prosecutors considered the sentence is too mild and appealed the decision to a higher court, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Recently, one of the accomplices of the young man was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment. Another accomplice was given a suspended sentence because he is seriously ill, while the case of the fourth culprit is being examined by another panel of judges. The fifth accused person is serving time in a prison in Russia and is to be later extradited to Moldova.
On December 6, last year, the men, being masked and armed, forced the door and entered the elderly person’s house in Cerlina village of Soroca district. They tied the man and woman and ordered that they give them US$20,000. When they refused, they were beaten, electrocuted and then burned.
The men stole 1,150 lei, a ring and a chain that they found in the house. The man and woman died in the hospital in two weeks.
The prosecutors established that the robbery was organized by the elderly person’s grandson, who knew that they had money because they sold a house situated in another district. The money was in the house, but the culprits did not find it.
