The students who work or are involved in internships will be able to live in dorms during summer as well. At the same time, the dorm managers recommend leaving these for the period of repair works, IPN reports.

The dorms of the Technical University of Moldova (UTM) will be open throughout summer because a part of the University’s employees also live there. They are provided with accommodation throughout the year. According to the UTM rector Viorel Bostan, the students will be lodged in dorms in summer based on applications submitted by the faculties or personally by each student. Applications are accepted by the end of June. The application should contain the reasons why lodging is needed and confirming documents should be attached. “The students can be accommodated in dorms in summer, but will not stay in their room. They will be moved to other rooms so that we could prepare all the rooms for the new year of studies. We usually ask the students to leave the dorms in summer while repair works are carried out,” stated Viorel Bostan.

According to the chairman of the UTM Student Trade Union Committee Anatol Alexei, the students involved in internships will pay the same accommodation charge as during the year, which is 40% of the costs incurred by the dorm. The other students who want to remain in the dorm in summer and have a job will pay 100% of the costs. The Technical University of Moldova has 11 dorms that accommodate about 2,500 students.

Marcel Abras, pro-rector on education and social issues of the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Nicolae Testemitanu”, said the students will be able to stay in their dorms until August 15. Repair works will be carried out in parallel on the upper floors. They will pay the same charge as during the academic year. The University has seven forms for Moldovan students that house about 1,500 persons.

Of the 12 dorms of the State University of Moldova, only two will be open in summer - Dorm No.2 and Dorm No. 4 - until August 20. According to the head of the University’s Social Issues Department Victor Garlea, their dorms will accommodate students who work in Chisinau. These will be able to live there after they submit an application and present a certificate showing that they work.

“We understand that many of them earn money for contract, for dorm accommodation charge and thus make the dorms available in summer, even if we are not obliged to,” stated Victor Garlea. More than 100 applications for being lodged in dorms have been submitted so far. The deadline for applications is July 10. Last summer, over 400 students asked to be allowed to live in dorms. More than 2,000 students live in the dorms of the State University of Moldova during the academic year.
