Gagauzia calls on the European Union, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, the United States of America, Turkey and Russia to condemn the “aggressive claims of Romania concerning the Republic of Moldova, which represent practically annexation”. A resolution that was adopted by the votes of about 500 persons in the meeting of the Extended Council of all the Gagauz authorities that was held in Tomai village expresses the firm position that the Gagauz autonomy and Moldova’s statehood should be kept and calls on the people to unite against unionism, IPN reports.
By this resolution, the participants in the meeting pleaded for keeping and strengthening the sovereign state the Republic of Moldova and condemned the “state policy of Romania aimed at absorbing the Republic of Moldova”. They called on the Ministry of Justice to stop the activity of the organizations whose goal is to liquidate the Republic of Moldova and to obtain the Union with Romania. They also called upon the Parliament and the President of the Republic of Moldova to adopt laws to ban persons who hold dual nationality from serving for state bodies and requested the Prosecutor General’s Office to investigate ex-President of Romania Traian Basescu and the mayors who signed union statements.
The Governor of Gagauzia Irina Vlah said she does not understand why unionism develops in Moldova and the law enforcement agencies do not react to the unionist acts, including the signing of union statements by mayors of Moldovan settlements, thanking in this connection those who signed anti-union statements. “In our Gagauzia, the autonomy is kept, but together we should struggle for statehood. There are forces believing that we will not find understanding inside, but we should not give up. If Gagauzia is weak, the Republic of Moldova will also be weak. We should concentrate on the independence and statehood of our country and on the strength of Gagauzia as part of the Republic of Moldova,” stated Irina Vlah.
Chairman of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia Vladimir Kyssa noted that the idea of Moldova’s union with Romania appeared in the People’s Council 100 years ago. A new “propaganda” stage started at the end of the 1880s and the start of the 1990s, when a statement on the union with Romania was adopted. He called on the law enforcement bodies of Gagauz to take measures and deal with the machinery that propagates the union with Romania and requested the administration of the Parliament and the President of the Republic of Moldova, the OSCE and the UN to publicly condemn the anti-constitutional unionist activities in Moldova.
Ex-Governor of Gagauzia Dumitru Croitor said the country is facing a real danger. “Dear people, Moldova is not your homeland only. It is our homeland too and you should ask us too when you decide its fate,” he stated, addressing the unionists.
Democratic MP Cornel Dudnic noted that Gagauzia should not stay aside when it is about the struggle against unionism. He condemned the visit paid by Irina Vlah to Romania in 2015 and the visits by Romanian officials to Gagauzia, saying these do not contribute to the struggle against unionism. He stated that if the union occurs, he will be the first who will take a gun in his hands to struggle for Gagauzia.
The resolution will be presented “for implementation” to the People’s Assembly and other authorities of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia.
