The University Legal Clinic and the Association “Pro femei” formulated a series of recommendations for the authorities for solving the problems of women with disabilities. The recommendations are contained in a study of the barriers and necessities of women with disabilities in the Republic of Moldova, which was presented in a news conference at IPN.

The study authors recommend the authorities to liquidate the barriers related to the access to education of gilrs with disabilities by placing classrooms at the first floor, setting up ramps for wheelchair users, training teachers for classes where there are children with hearing impairments.

“The lack of conditions is one of the obstacles faced by the young women with disabilities in education institutions. Ultimately, the parents of the girls with disabilities prefer to keep them at home. Thus, these children remain out of school.”

In kindergartens and general schools, the teachers do not know sign language. No completely deaf person attends general education institutions. The women with mental disabilities also do not have access to studies,” said Olga Cenusa, director of the Association “Pro femei”.

The employment is another problem that the authorities must deal with.

“The women with disabilities can perform particular operations very well. They are yet discriminated on employment and after they are employed and are harassed at the workplace.

“Most of the buildings in the country are not accessible to women with locomotor disabilities. In most of the cases, there is no wheelchair access and no adjusted sanitary facilities. The doors are narrow and the buildings with many stories do not have elevators,” said the authors of the study.

Access to health is also a problem faced by the women with disabilities. “In the main, the medical services for persons with disabilities are not free or compensated by the state.  The equipment provided by the state for persons with disabilities is not appropriated for the individual needs of women with disabilities. Psychological counseling for mothers of children with disabilities is not ensured,” says the study.
